Recovery Coaching
What do I do after addiction treatment?
Finding your footing in recovery can be challenging. After all, it is a brand-new way of life! Your whole world may feel like it has been turned upside down. You may be feeling overwhelmed by the new wave of emotions you’re suddenly experiencing, and you’re perhaps struggling to navigate life without an escape button. This situation can lead to feeling a little lost, and like the ground underneath you is uneven. You’re likely to be asking questions about what a life in recovery looks like.
- What now?
- Who am I?
- How do I live my life as a sober person?
- Is this decision the right one to support my recovery?
It is these unanswered questions, overwhelm, and lack of direction that can lead to feelings of loneliness and — even worse — returning to use. Studies show that between 40 and 70 percent of those leaving treatment fall back into their old lifestyle within a year of treatment, with two-thirds of those people returning to use within a few weeks. This is why it is critical that after the first few weeks after treatment, you find the right support and structure to support your new life in recovery.
These challenges and questions are ones I encounter every day as I help my clients to navigate their new lives in recovery. Through my hands-on approach and with compassion, I inspire clients to achieve long-term recovery and any goals they set out to achieve.
My name is Theo de Vries. I am an international certified recovery coach and interventionist, As a person in long-term recovery and a certified recovery coach, I understand intimately that the road to recovery can be a challenging one, but I inherently believe that we can recover from substance use disorder and live a fulfilling life.
What is a recovery coach?
“A recovery coach is someone who is trained and interested in promoting recovery by removing barriers and obstacles to recovery by serving as a personal guide and mentor for people who are recovering or looking for recovery.”
The Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR)
I believe that life in recovery isn’t about less — it is about more. It is about making life colorful again. It’s about waking up in the morning excited about what the day ahead of you may bring. Sure, we have bad days, but with the right strategy, tools, and support structure, I can help you navigate those roadblocks so that you can take them in stride.
Recovery coaching is not like therapy — we don’t look at the past. We look at the present and at how you can move forward. My role is to motivate, inspire, and act as a confidential advisor and guide.
Through personalized recovery coaching, we will create a bespoke package (a Personal Recovery Wellness Plan) designed to guide, support, and maintain your recovery. You can expect to meet with me regularly through a variety of secure and discreet means both in person and remotely — including Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp — and with regular check-ins I will help you develop new healthy habits, find the coping strategies that work for you, and set goals. The scope of my care spans an intensive program over several weeks and months, including a monitoring period after the completion of our work together.
How can recovery coaching help you?
Perhaps you’re asking yourself whether recovery coaching is right for you. You may already be in recovery, but you may not be satisfied with your life. I can help you at any stage of the recovery process and with any goal in mind.
As your certified recovery coach, I will do everything I can to help kickstart your life at any stage of recovery. Together, we will develop strategies for your:
- Social support network
- Emotional, physical, and spiritual health
- Training and career
- Living environment
- Relationships
- Internal and external barriers that prevent you from achieving greatness
Perhaps most importantly, I will be a consistent and reliable source of support for you. That means I am available day and night, 24 hours a day.
I am available to travel and connect with clients internationally — my clients include individuals who live in Europe and the Middle East. I am also available to work with a range of clients across occupational, intellectual, and environmental capacities.
My role is also one of support to families. Addiction can take its toll on families, often damaging relationships and putting a strain on the family unit. That is why recovery needs to involve the family. As a certified interventionist, I can help act as an intermediary to help loved ones get the help they need, and as a coach I can help restore relationships by involving family and friends in the process of recovery.
